Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
